Hello! This is a short week...Yeah!! Happy Thanksgiving!! This week we will be reading informational articles/essays from our class text book. We will be using the Reading Strategies to work on information retention. We will also be reviewing the informational and functional parts of paper and on-line news sources. Welcome to a new quarter!! We are going to continue to review the Six Reading Strategies as we continue the class novel, The Darkside of Nowhere. We will also be concentrating on understanding and effectively using the different text types, informational, functional, and literary. This week we will be continuing to read our class novel, The Dark Side of Nowhere. As we read we will be practicing the six reading strategies we have been learning. We will do this by creating a foldable book that students will be able to write in and show their knowledge of the strategies. WE will also be working on the Student Brochure Project. This was suppose to have been completed last week, but do to scheduling changes in the computer lab, we will be finishing those this week. Here is this weeks schedule:

Each student has been given a brochure to identify the important information and show understanding of this type of functional text. Then, students will create their own brochure for a product or service that they design. Most of the work will be done in class, however, if students choose not to use their time wisely, they will need to complete the project at home. WE will also be starting a class novel this week. WE will be reading the fun Science Fiction novel The Dark Side of Nowhere, by Neal Schusterman. As we read, we will be utilizing the Reading Strategies we have been learning in class. This week we will be continuing with our discussions and use of informational text types. We will also be reviewing the Reading Strategies as they apply to using informational text. Next, we will move on to learning about and practicing our skills at using functional text. Also, apply the strategies to this type of text. By the end of the week, we will be starting a brochure creating activity which will allow students to apply what they have learned about informational and functional text types. reading and writing activities will be done in class; there will only be homework if students don't finish their work in class.

Students will have the opportunity to work with several different types of functional texts and have worksheets and activities that go along with them. Students will have plenty of time to finish the worksheets in class, however, if a student chooses to not use his or her time wisely, they will be responsible to finish the work at home. Thursday & Friday: Textbook Treasure Hunt; using skills that we are learning to find specific things in text books and creating a treasure hunt for a partner in class. No Homework.

Week 8/31-9/4 Continued
Hello All, We are now up and running with a place for you to check what is going on in reading class. Remember to check the "What did I miss?" board and the "Missing Hand-Outs" file basket if you are absent. Students need to have a novel to read each day in class. The library is open at 7:00am Mon-Thur. Students get participation points for having a novel everyday in class.
The following is a list of what we will be doing in class this week:
